As we head into a new week I want to take a moment to talk to you about our up and coming math unit: ALGEBRA! Now, I know the word "Algebra" is an intimidating word BUT I promise that I have a large amount of fun and engaging lessons set up to make Algebra fun and meaningful! To get yourself comfortable with some of the vocabulary associated with Algebra, and to see that Algebra is not all that intimidating please take some time to play on Math Prodigy, using your username and password we set up in class last week. Please be sure to play any and all games under the "Patterning and Algebra" section! A shortcut to the link can be found below:

Parents:
During the next two weeks, your children and I will be taking a journey through the world of Algebra in our math class. Algebra can be a difficult and challenging unit for many students, so I encourage you to support your child with positive encouragement, encourage them to access their Math Prodigy account at home and use it as a means of practicing their Algebra skills. Lastly, I strongly encourage you to reach out to me should your child have some serious struggles with this unit. I have taken a lot of time to carefully organize and plan this unit so that all students will be engaged, understand what they are learning, and have fun learning Algebra! Below is a list of the specific expectations that will be addressed this upcoming week, and additionally the terminology for these expectations can be found in Math Prodigy, so please feel free to explore the game with your child!
Specific expectations addressed this coming week with Patterning & Algebra:
- make tables of values for growing patterns, given pattern rules in words (e.g., start with 3, then double each term and add 1 to get the next term), then list the ordered pairs (with the first coordinate representing the term number and the second coordinate representing the term) and plot the points in the first quadrant, using a variety of tools.
- determine the term number of a given term in a growing pattern that is represented by a pattern rule in words, a table of values, or a graph.
- describe pattern rules (in words) that generate patterns by adding or subtracting a constant, or multiplying or dividing by a constant, to get the next term.
